The Barbecue

The Barbecue

48:00 | 1993 | DRAMA

One of the few Moxam films that displays affinities with the more fantastical Winnipegian works of Guy Maddin et al., The Barbecue opens with a young black woman, Gracie (Moxam regular Anne Clarke), being forced to watch a bizarre stage performance. She awakens from this nightmare to find herself in another: she's heading off to a family barbecue with her ex-boyfriend. As the sun descends, Gracie struggles heroically to rein in her temper as she deals with his family's not so well-disguised racism. A comedy with decidedly sinister overtones, The Barbecue is creepy, unsettling and uncomfortably funny. - TIFF
